The 2010s have seen the rise of authoritarian political figures, larger than life leaders have gained political powers through the masses.

Media houses and think tanks have often called Narendra Modi, Donald Trump, Viktor Orban, Recep Tayyib Erdoğan, and Jair Bolsonaro authoritarian leaders. So what is common among this lot?

They are all democratically elected heads of their respective states and enjoy popular support amongst their electorate, they claim to be the representative of the masses and vehemently oppose the elites. Terminologies like ‘drain the swamp’ (Donald Trump’s way of getting rid of elites) and ‘Khan market gang’ (Narendra Modi’s…

A storm erupted on 2nd February when Rihanna tweeted about the ongoing farmer’s protest. Soon, Mia Khalifa, Meena Harris and Greta Thunberg supported in favour of farmer’s protests. However, what followed after that was not only bizarre but also very much telling about the Indian government and Indian celebrities.

A day after the tweet the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement saying that the farmer’s protest was India’s internal matter and ‘sensational’ statements like these should be avoided. …

I saw the trailer of Netflix’s White Tiger introducing Adarsh Gourav and starring Priyanka Chopra and Rajkumar Rao. While visiting the trailer, I remembered that I had read the original book and tried recollecting it. I didn’t remember much, but I did remember that it was an easy and quick read. At that time, I failed to understand why the book had won a man-booker prize as this was like any other humorous book I had read; this was way back in 2016 when I was in my second year in college and was still trying to figure things out.

Andy Mukherjee’s essay on losing hope in India has generated a buzz amongst many people. I was thrilled and taken aback to read this particular essay. Here is a person born in the 70s, worked in India, became a respected journalist goes on to declare publicly on Bloomberg that he is losing hope in India. Mukherjee has witnessed one of the most exciting parts of Indian political history. He has seen the assassination of a prime minister, the liberalisation of the economy, constant change of governments in the 1990s, the coalition governments and the rise of Modi from 2014 onwards.

The moment Arnab Goswami was jailed it was expected that he was going to get bail soon and within seven days he managed to get bail easily. India’s press freedom and liberty index would be sky-rocketing if every case was handled the way Arnab’s case was handled. Later, comedian Kunal Kumra was facing contempt charges because he made fun of the judge and the Supreme Court as it was seen favouring Arnab over others.

Interestingly, this entire episode has brought out some interesting pointers that I found unique and worth thinking over:

It does not matter who you are, what…

France’s republic is based on the principles of Liberté, égalité, fraternité or liberty, equality and fraternity. Emmanuel Macron, the French President, is facing a backlash against some Muslim-majority for allowing the publication of caricatures that insult Prophet Mohammad.

Macron’s actions have risen a debate about whether caricatures that hurt religious sentiment can be allowed or not. Many people across the world, including many Indians, supported Macron’s statements. Some Indian Muslims condemned his statements. However, many people do not seem to realise that the same caricature, if originated from India, would lead to arrests of the publication.

Full Disclosure: I was underprepared.

I registered for the UGC NET (An exam to become a professor) way back in June. I soon found a job in July which compelled me to shift to Hyderabad. I moved to the city by mid-July and forgot that I had registered for any such exam. I thought that there is no way that this exam is gonna take place in such a situation

But anything can happen and soon enough UGC declared that the exam was scheduled for September. India was reporting little less than 100,000 cases a day. …

Twitter is filled with people who identify as “Nationalist”, “Indian First”, “Proud American” and what not. The line between patriotism and jingoism for many of these self-declared nationalists is blurry. They cannot tolerate anything that contradicts the nation. Take the recent example of a Youtuber who issued rape threats to a female comedian for allegedly insulting a national hero. When national heroes become gods, they become infallible, so anything that contradicts them, criticises them or questions their actions or thoughts is deemed as intolerable and offensive.

For many people, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is extremely important as a political-philosopher, and for…

The discipline of Engineering is all about technical innovation, out of the box thinking, advanced logical reasoning and a natural technical curiosity about your field. These traits can help you become a good engineer but they are not enough to get you into India’s prestigious engineering colleges. One of the earliest battles of the First World War was the Battle of the Frontiers between the Germans and French. The French were losing around 30,000 troops a single day. The English, who were fighting alongside the French, were a major sea power, their troops were not used to fighting a long land battle for days. So when the news of 8000 Englishmen dying in the battle reached an English General he literally fainted, another one committed suicide. Such vast numbers came as a shock to people around the world. …
